So Why Bitcoin?
Maybe you don't need Bitcoin. Maybe you don't understand Bitcoin. And maybe PayPal, Venmo, or your bank account serve your needs just fine. But don't write off Bitcoin as simply a vehicle for financial speculation. For millions of people around the world, it's an escape hatch from tyranny and nothing less than freedom money!
Trust is key for us! We have over 400,000 students at Coursenvy and we only want to share content that will benefit everyone! So when we discovered Bitcoin in 2017, we first thought "What is this Ponzi scheme?" and "How can I trust Bitcoin?" But then we educated ourselves about what Bitcoin was and what problems it solved.
Bitcoin is money in its purest form. No entity or government controls it or can print more of it. Bitcoin is scarce (like gold), only 21,000,000 BTC will ever exist. Bitcoin is peer-to-peer electronic cash.
Bitcoin is a decentralized, impossible to cheat, digital record of trade. Bitcoin is a digital asset that is issued and transferred over a network of interconnected computers (decentralized) that each independently verifies that everyone else is playing by the rules. Bitcoin is the alternative to centrally controlled, fee-collecting, non-profit sharing banks.
Satoshi Nakamoto (the inventor of Bitcoin) stated it perfectly, "I’ve developed a new open-source P2P e‑cash system called Bitcoin. It’s completely decentralized, with no central server or trusted parties, because everything is based on crypto proof instead of trust.
The root problem with conventional currency is all the trust that’s required to make it work. The central bank must be trusted not to debase the currency, but the history of fiat currencies is full of breaches of that trust. Banks must be trusted to hold our money and transfer it electronically, but they lend it out in waves of credit bubbles with barely a fraction in reserve. We have to trust them with our privacy, trust them not to let identity thieves drain our accounts. Their massive overhead costs make micropayments impossible.
With e‑currency based on cryptographic proof, without the need to trust a third-party middleman, money can be secure and transactions effortless.
Bitcoin’s solution is to use a peer-to-peer network to check for double-spending. In a nutshell, the network works like a distributed timestamp server, stamping the first transaction to spend a coin. It takes advantage of the nature of information being easy to spread but hard to stifle." http://www.bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf
